Emotional Support for Bariatric Patients
Weight loss surgery is a life-changing experience, and with these changes, patients can go through emotional alterations. To make sure you are healthy in all aspects of your recovery and weight loss, patients will undergo a psychosocial assessment, where you will meet with a licensed clinical social worker who will explain to you the emotional changes that may occur with your physical transformation, to make sure you are mentally prepared for and have a positive outcome after surgery.
By identifying potential problem areas, the counselor can aid you in making healthy lifestyle changes, help you develop strong coping mechanisms and ensuring that a solid support system is in place. For some, it may be as simple as exploring alternatives to eating when bored or stressed. We want to make sure that weight loss surgery results in the most positive life changes possible for you. Patients are also encouraged to attend support groups. Groups for patients at all stages of recovery and those who are still deciding if surgery is right for them are available. If any behavioral or emotional issues arise during the process, a clinical social worker is available for counseling and aiding the patient in adjusting to their new lifestyle. |
