Am I A Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?
Clinically severe, or morbid obesity is a chronic condition that is very difficult to treat. Surgery is an option for clinically severe obese patients who have tried and failed a number of previous attempts to lose weight through traditional weight loss methods.
Eligible patients for weight loss surgery generally have a Body Mass Index of 40 or greater. BMI of 40 translates to about 100 pounds over ideal body weight for men or 80 pounds over ideal body weight for women. People with a BMI of 35 or over who have other weight-related health conditions such as diabetes, obesity-related heart disease, severe sleep apnea, high cholesterol, or obesity-induced physical problems interfering with lifestyle, such as joint disease, may also be candidates for weight loss surgery. Those with a genetic condition that causes obesity may be candidates as well. Individual Evaluation If the initial visit determines that bariatric surgery or lap band surgery may be right for you, and most importantly, you decide the procedure is right for you, you will be asked to fill out an extensive medical history and will be scheduled for an appointment to learn more about the nutritional and psychological aspects surrounding successful weight loss through bariatric surgery. You will also need a physical examination by an Arnot Health Bariatric Surgery Program provider, to establish pertinent lab work and testing to assure your utmost health and safety during and after the medical procedure. To schedule a one-on-one consultation with a member of the Arnot Health Bariatric Surgery team call 607-796-5936. |
