Motivational Interviewing for Health Behavior Change

When: Thursday, May 13th 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. lunch and snacks included
Fee: $20 Registration fee. Additional costs paid by the NYS Tobacco Control Program Cessation Center at Arnot Health.

Targeted audience: physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, certified social workers, respiratory therapists and public health educators.


Goal: From the training, you will gain skills to enhance motivation before offering a patient treatment.

Objectives:

  • Describe the "spirit" of Motivational Interviewing
  • Demonstrate and practice the interpersonal style and primary skills for engaging the patient, responding to resistance and exploring and enhancing motivation for behavior change
  • Name the four principles of Motivational Interviewing
  • Describe strategies to elicit and respond to "change talk"

University of Dartmouth Medical School Smoking Cessation for Pregnancy and Beyond: Learn Proven Strategies to Help Your Patients Quit. This program, based on the "Virtual Practicum" model, is intended for health care providers who will be assisting their female patients in quitting smoking, in particular, patients who are pregnant or in their child-bearing years.

Credit is now available for physicians (ACCME), counselors (NBCC, NYS OASAS, and CAADAC), and pharmacists. Eighteen hours of courses are available on topics ranging from the basics of tobacco cessation to specific information for helping women, children, teens, and the elderly to quit tobacco as well as information on smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipes.
