After Delivery
Right after giving birth, a labor and birth nurse will show the new mother how to hold the baby and help with the first breastfeeding. This is a time for the new mother to rest and get to know the newborn. Mother and baby will have matching identification bands that are checked every time she is given the baby. A nurse will bring mom and baby in a wheelchair to their private postpartum room in the Schweizer Pavilion's second-floor Maternity Unit.

When it is time to leave the hospital, we'll send mom home with a gift bag and printed information that may answer many questions in the first two weeks. The baby must ride home in an approved infant car seat. Parents must practice securing the car seat in the vehicle to avoid delays on discharge day. Parents should also bring an outfit for the baby to wear home.

Bringing a new baby home is the moment parents wait for, but they may feel a little anxious. Our recommendations for new parents include:

  • Sleep when the baby sleeps
  • Accept offers of help
  • Make time to be alone as a new family.
